In China, the output of molybdenum concentrate was up 22.48% year-on-year to 180,589 tons in 2008, but a sharp drop in growth margin against 53.76% in 2007. In addition, the output of molybdenum oxide reached 755,14 tons in 2008, a 22.48% YoY rise but with a drop of 22.04 points in growth margin compared with previous year. Meanwhile, the molybdenum concentrate output witnessed a big growth in China in 2008, increasing 33,149 tons (the standard amount, including 45% of molybdenum) compared to 2007. The increment of molybdenum concentrate output was mainly concentrated in Henan, Hebei, Liaoning, Shaanxi, and Inner Mongolia, in particular Henan province with the most increment.

So far, the price of molybdenum has remained low impacted by global economic downturn. Moreover, the indices such as main business revenue and profit of molybdenum manufacturers all have been in the downturn compared to the average level of previous year. During the first half of 2009, both of main business revenue and profit margin of China’s main molybdenum manufacturers dropped sharply. The revenue of Gold Molybdenum Co., Ltd was RMB1.833 billion, down RMB1.594 billion and 46.52% year-on-year; the total profit was RMB266 million, decreasing 87.16% year-on-year; and the net profit attributable to parent company owners reached RMB20 million, down 88.47% year-on-year. The net profit of China Molybdenum Co., Ltd dropped 84% to RMB197 million.
