BenQ will begin shipments of LED-backlit LCD TVs in Taiwan in the second quarter of 2010, and expects LED models to account for over 20% of its total LCD TV shipments in 2010, according Danny Yao, general manager of BenQ Taiwan.

BenQ aims to ship 100,000-120,000 LCD TVs in 2010 in Taiwan, including 25,000-30,000 LED-backlit models, Yao said, adding that the company will have a 12% market share in Taiwan's LCD TV market in 2010.

LED-backlit TV sales in the overall Taiwan market during the Lunar New Year holidays last month increased by 12% on year, and the monthly sales over the past two to three months have exceeded 10,000 units, Yao said.

The Taiwan LCD TV market amounted to more than one million units in 2009, of which 3-5% were LED-backlit models, Yao said.

BenQ's LCD TV ASPs dropped about 7% in 2009, slower than the market's average decline of 11-12%, Yao said.

LED-backlit LCD monitor shipments are expected to account for 60% of BenQ's total monitor shipments of 300,000-360,000 units in 2010, Yao added.

BenQ's LED monitors will have a 20-22% market share in Taiwan in 2010, Yao said, adding the monitor market in Taiwan will see LED models account for 90% by 2013.

In terms of 3D display, Yao is more optimistic about 3D projectors than 3D TVs, but 3D projectors will have yet to become popular in 2011 due to limited content supply and high prices of shutter glasses.

BenQ expects to ship 20,000 projectors in 2010 in Taiwan, he said.

The company plans to launch projectors with point draw function in 2010 to challenge electronic whiteboards in the education market. BenQ also plans to launch ultra short-throw models, which can project a 60-inch screen in 31cm distant, in the third quarter of 2010, Yao said.
