Source :Global Times update : 2010-09-08
China's active mobile phone readers climbed to more than 200 million in the second quarter, research firm Analysys International said in a report Monday.
The booming market was bolstered by the entry of telecom operators, said Analysys.
China Mobile launched its mobile phone reading business in May, planning to invest over 50 billion yuan ($7.37 billion) in the business over the next five years. The company attracted a huge amount of customers because it charges no fees.
China Unicom entered into the market in June. China Telecom's Tianyi reading platform will go live tomorrow.
According to Analysys, the interaction between content providers and readers, and the rapid expansion of electronic readers and mobile phone reading terminal clients also contributed to the boom.
Online publisher Shanda Literature carried out translation contests jointly with magazines including The World of English and put award-winning translation pieces onto Shanda's Yunzhong online bookstore.
Analysys believed the market has huge potential driven by over 800 million mobile phone users in the country.
PC makers including Lenovo, Founder and ASUS, and telecom equipment makers such as Hauwei and Datang Telecom have also produced electronic readers.
