Sales of Mobile phones in China's mobile device market topped 59.16 million in the second quarter of this year, increasing 7.5 percent from the same period of 2009, including 8.17 million units of 3G handsets.

Persistent growth of consumption demand for 3G mobile devices boosted the sales of 3G cell phones by 33.7 percent in the second quarter of 2010 from January-March.

After increasing the effective coverage of 3G networks, expanding the carrying capacity of business, and optimizing 2G/3G network switching technology, China's telecom operators, namely China Mobile (CHL.NYSE; 00941.HK), China Unicom (CHU.NYSE; 600050.SH; 00762.HK) and China Telecom (CHA.NYSE; 00728.HK), focused on terminal devices, marketing channels, and service bills of 3G business in the second quarter, which ensured stable development of the 3G user base.

China Mobile paid closer attention to the medium- and low-end market, further enriched the production line and functions of TD-SCDMA mobile phones, and quickly distributed some new handset models valued at below 1,000 yuan/unit in the market. The carrier sold 2.62 million 3G cell phones in the second quarter.

Besides enhancing network support and rolling out a series of mobile Internet applications, China Unicom cut the minimum price of its 3G service package a number of times and focused on promoting popular mobile phone models, boosting the sales of 3G handsets to 3.07 million units in April-June.

China Telecom continued to concentrate on products and sales channels, working hard in moving its 2G service subscribers to 3G service users, which contributed considerably to the sales of its CDMA-EVDO mobile phones, and sold 2.48 million 3G handsets in the second quarter.
