Japan's Softbank Mobile attracts 163,000 subscribers in August

SOFTBANK MOBILE CORP. attracted a net 163,300 subscribers in August, the highest in the Japanese cell phone industry for a 16th consecutive month, the Telecommunications Carriers Association reported Friday. The Softbank Corp. (TSE:9984) cellular phone unit achieved the increase through the popularity of its new handset offerings such APPLE INC.'s iPhone 3G, which was launched in July.
* NTT DoCoMo Inc. (TSE:9437) came in second at 84,400, with Emobile Ltd. following closely behind at 84,300.
KDDI Corp. (TSE:9433) ranked fourth for a third straight month at 54,900.
* In August, some 33,600 subscribers switched to Softbank Mobile from rival providers, bringing their old numbers with them as part of the number portability system.
